Why most cover letters don't get read
A recruiter opens a cover letter and sees: "I am writing to express my strong interest in the position of…". They've read that sentence four hundred times this month. They skip to the CV.
Most cover letters fail in one of three ways:
- They're generic. Swap the company name and the letter works for any job, which tells the reader you didn't think about theirs.
- They repeat the CV. A paragraph per job, in the same order, adds nothing the reader can't already see.
- They're written by AI and sound like it. Smooth, confident, full of "passionate" and "dynamic" — and sometimes claiming skills you don't have.
A good cover letter is short and specific. It answers two questions the CV can't: why this company, and why you, for this role, now.
How to write one that works
You don't need a template. You need four short paragraphs:
- Open with the match. One or two sentences that connect what they need to something you've done. "You're rebuilding onboarding for mid-market accounts; I did that at Northwind and cut time-to-value from six weeks to two."
- Prove it with one story. Pick your strongest relevant result and tell it briefly: the situation, what you did, the outcome with a number.
- Show you know them. Mention something real — a product launch, a market they're entering, a value they talk about — and why it matters to you.
- Close plainly. Say you'd like to talk and how to reach you. No "I eagerly await".
Keep it under 300 words. Use their words for the skills you really have. Read it out loud; if it doesn't sound like you on a good day, rewrite the sentence that doesn't.
