The problem with "AI resume builders"
You've probably tried one. You paste in your CV and a job description, and seconds later you get something that reads beautifully — and says you "spearheaded cross-functional initiatives" you don't remember, with a team size you never had.
That's the trap. Generic AI writing tools are built to sound like a strong match, so they fill gaps with plausible fiction. A good tailored CV changes emphasis, not facts. For each job:
- Lead with the evidence the job cares about. If the role is about retention, your churn result belongs in the first bullet, not the fifth.
- Use the posting's words where they're true. If you "ran user interviews" and they ask for "user research", say user research.
- Show results with numbers you can defend. "Cut onboarding time from 9 days to 4" beats "improved onboarding".
- Cut what doesn't help this job. Two lines on an unrelated internship cost you space a recruiter would spend on your best work.
- Stay readable for an ATS. One column, standard section names, consistent dates.
